The Energy Bomb……The Biewer Yorkie

D Dog Fan | March 12th, 2008

Much like its cousin: – the Yorkie- the Biewer Yorkie is an energetic little dog, that really and truly loves to play. This is an active breed, and apart from the daily grooming that you must give this little dog, you are also required to take it for long daily walks. Playtime will take care of a lot of their exercise needs. However, as with most dog breeds, playtime is one thing and exercise is another. Daily walks will prevent destructive behavior at home, since with their daily doses of playtime and excersise, they can be adequately stimulated; both on a mental and a physical level. Both of you will be the happier for it, if you take part in mutual bonding time in the form of a good run.

What’s in a name?

The Biewer (pronounced ?Bee-vair?), since it’s conception in 1984, has gotten a few very nice names. It is most often known as the Biewer Yorkie, but names such as ?Biewer Terrier?, ?Biewer a la Pom Pon?, ?Biewer Yorkshire Terrier? or ?Biewer Yorkshire?are also acceptable and often used!

The Temperament of the Biewer Yorkie…

Isn’t is a weird and wonderful fact of nature, that the small creatures also believe they are large in their own right? I read a couple of years ago, that the best leaders are the tallest and the shortest people. I guess this is pure psychology, but it seems to apply to the Biewer Yorkie as well! The saying: “Dynamite comes in small packages” sure applies to this little guy as well. Biewer Yorkies are not aware of their small stature, and although some might laugh at them, and not take them seriously, this will only infuriate this little dog even more. So do beware of them! Biewer Yorkies make wonderful guard-dogs. The territorial instict of this little dog is high, and it guards its house and home with ferocious assertiveness. Other intruders – be that of the Homo Sapien or the Canine variety – are not welcome. Other little animals like ferrets, small dogs, cats and rabbits will be put in their place quickly enough!

This little dog knows what it wants, and don’t for a second think that it “cleared its throat” for tonight’s choir practice. So although courage is its middle name, a Biewer Yorkie is lovable and very family-oriented. It likes to be in the company of bigger dogs and children. As for how a Biewer reacts when scared or frightened? Well, the fight or flight scenario also applies to them. But they don’t flee. They become snappy, irritable, and bite. Have I only mentioned negative things about this little dog? These are only realistic character traits of a Biewer, that I think must be mentioned. Of course beneath the ” cold and hard exterior” (Geez, that sounds like a line out of a Mills and Boon’s novel), the Biewer Yorkie is one of the most lovable and misunderstood dogs. It wants to be respected, and that is all it asks. There is a Hungarian Proverb that I like very much: ” The pepper is small, but oh so strong”. That truly describes a Biewer Yorkie, I think.

Hello Everyone! I decided to dedicate this Blog to one of my favorite small dogs: The Biewer Yorkie! I think that this rare little dog needs more attention, and anyone who is seriously clued up on dog breeds, will know that this little canine is not only rare, but rather popular as well. While demand outweighs supply, it is not surprising that this little dog is quite expensive too. But far from getting into the basis of Economics, I hope to create an enjoyable Blog for everyone who is a fan of the Biewer Yorkie. I decided that once a week I will write a paragraph or two, about the cousin of the much-loved Yorkshire Terrier, which, although is quite similar to a Biewer, still lacks certain features that makes the Biewer Yorkie so much more unique! I don’t want this Blog to be dry and factual. I welcome every reader’s comments and expertise as well. So……where to start…. How about the temperament of this little fella?
