Registering a dog at the American Kennel Club allows the owner to be officially documented as a part of the breed’s history as time goes by and supporting canine research, proper dog care and other thrusts for responsible ownership. Upon registration, the dogs receive a health plan trial, a complimentary veterinarian visit and the eligibility to compete in AKC sponsored events.

Unfortunately the Biewer Yorkie is not a recognized breed by the AKC till this day. However it was accepted by the American Rare Breed Association or ABRA as a rare breed in December 2007 and the National Breed club title was given to the Biewer Terrier Club of American, Inc. In their country of origin, Germany, the breed is recognized by more than 50 clubs and registries. AKC recognized or not, these little dogs are finding their ways into the homes of loving and caring families.

Getting a Yorkie is not as simple as going to a “pet store” and pick out what may appear to be a purebred when in actuality it may be a product of what is known as a “backyard breeder”. Before purchasing a Yorkie, one must research on what comprises the accepted and desired breed standard. Biewer Yorkies have compact and neat bodies, 8 ½ inches in height and 7 pounds in weight, with shiny and silky coats that can be long enough to reach the floor. These are just a few of the traits that must be present to qualify what one may see as a true purebred.

Getting as much reliable information as one can will definitely arm a prospective owner in the face of shady or irresponsible breeders trying to pass their canines as the real thing. Here are some red flags that may indicate a breeder may not be true to the Biewer Yorkie standard:

Pay and take the puppy with no questions asked

Breeder doesn’t have any connections with accredited or recognized clubs for the breed

No written documentation on the dogs bloodline or lineage

No guarantees that the breed you are getting is of sound health.

Unable to give names of former buyers for reference

Falling for these will have one run the risk of investing not only money, but time, devotion and hope on a canine that was thought to be what one had always wanted but fell short due to the lack of information and education. When searching for a quality breeder, one should look for these signs:

Breeder respect the breed by keeping its temperament of being independent, fearless, of high-energy and people oriented.

Preventing health issues such as hip and joint issues and poor digestion by informing the buyer

Kennels are clean and the diet given is more than adequate

Documents and certificates are ready and nothing is hidden

With an excellent track record of providing dogs to serious dog lovers, Euro Puppy is one resource that one can turn to when looking for a purebred Biewer Yorkie. Euro Puppy boasts it reputation by having a network of dog experts and enthusiasts that not only focus on breeding for companionship, but for also keeping the lineage of the purebred whole and not tainted. Contact with Euro Puppy doesn’t end once one receives the dog. Continuous contact and feedback makes this organization grow in respect, establishes it seal of quality and stays on track on its commitment of building families.

Isn’t is a weird and wonderful fact of nature, that the small creatures also believe they are large in their own right? I read a couple of years ago, that the best leaders are the tallest and the shortest people. I guess this is pure psychology, but it seems to apply to the Biewer Yorkie as well! The saying: “Dynamite comes in small packages” sure applies to this little guy as well. Biewer Yorkies are not aware of their small stature, and although some might laugh at them, and not take them seriously, this will only infuriate this little dog even more. So do beware of them! Biewer Yorkies make wonderful guard-dogs. The territorial instict of this little dog is high, and it guards its house and home with ferocious assertiveness. Other intruders – be that of the Homo Sapien or the Canine variety – are not welcome. Other little animals like ferrets, small dogs, cats and rabbits will be put in their place quickly enough!

This little dog knows what it wants, and don’t for a second think that it “cleared its throat” for tonight’s choir practice. So although courage is its middle name, a Biewer Yorkie is lovable and very family-oriented. It likes to be in the company of bigger dogs and children. As for how a Biewer reacts when scared or frightened? Well, the fight or flight scenario also applies to them. But they don’t flee. They become snappy, irritable, and bite. Have I only mentioned negative things about this little dog? These are only realistic character traits of a Biewer, that I think must be mentioned. Of course beneath the ” cold and hard exterior” (Geez, that sounds like a line out of a Mills and Boon’s novel), the Biewer Yorkie is one of the most lovable and misunderstood dogs. It wants to be respected, and that is all it asks. There is a Hungarian Proverb that I like very much: ” The pepper is small, but oh so strong”. That truly describes a Biewer Yorkie, I think.
