The answer is definitely yes, if you would like to be the proud owner of an energetic, loyal and intelligent little dog that can also become an excellent watchdog as they are brave and are eager for adventure. These dogs are wonderful companions that are very affectionate with their family, but tend to become dominant if not cared properly and not given enough love. The Biewer Yorkie likes children, especially the older ones, who know how to treat a dog. They get on well with other dogs and pets in the house if they are raised together, otherwise if they are allowed to take over the house they can easily become jealous and demanding. A daily walk and half an hour playing session will do for them. These dogs can be kept in an apartment, but the best is a small house with a fenced yard to play.

The coat of the Biewer Yorkie is long, smooth and straight that must be brushed at least weekly. Every few weeks special attention must also be paid to the hair of the ears, as it must be trimmed to keep the ear erect. This breed is a relatively healthy one, they are only prone to some genetics problems and health issues like eye irritations or early tooth decay. Their digestion requires special care, many dry food with added canned food to keep them healthy.

Training this little toy dog is easy, as they are very clever and are always eager for adventure, but they need a dominant, consistent and firm trainer and lots of attention and patience. They can excel as show dogs.

All in all, the Biewer Yorkie is the best for families with older children and a house with a small, fenced yard for some daily exercise with the family.

I hope this article will help you decide whether the Biewer Yorkie is the best breed for you and for your family.

Is it normal, anyway?!

Yes, it is. Just imagine the situation from the point of view of your Biewer Yorkie. He is part of the family, often treated as “the kid”, and then, suddenly, a new creature arrives and takes all the attention of his beloved family. It is quite similar to what older children feel, when a little brother/sister arrives. One of the differences is just that the dog can’t speak English

Actually, if we are aware of this ‘problem’ in advance, the situation can be handled, but it needs consciousness and to be started in time, long before the baby’s arrival. Let’s see how we can prepare our Biewer Yorkie for the new family member.

If your dog’s daily routine has to be changed with the baby’s arrival (it probably will), you should start changing the rules much earlier, giving him plenty of time to get used to the new set up. This way it isn’t going to be so sudden and shocking. If your Yorkie hasn’t really been trained before, it’s high time to start. He should learn at least a few commands, like sit, stay, etc. This way, he’ll be easier to handle.

Many families worry about their dog endangering the health of the child, so the best thing to do is to take your pet to the vet, get him checked and get some advice. Get your Biewer Yorkie used to the new smells, sounds in advance (blankets, lotions, toys). It’s also a good idea, that just after your baby was born, send home a blanket that the baby had been in, so your dog can experience the child’s smell in advance. It is very important to know that your Yorkie will get a lot less attention from the mother, so when taking the baby home for the first time, the mother should greet the dog, so it is better if someone else is carrying the baby.

It is also a good idea not to leave them alone together at the first times, until your Biewer Yorkie feels comfortable with the baby, because, for example, it is very possible that the dog won’t tolerate the child’s crying very well in the beginning. You have to teach him that this is a normal sound, and you should motivate him not to bark (with treats, for example).

And the most important rule for last, maybe it seems too obvious, but it’s still worth mentioning: try to give as much attention to your Biewer Yorkie as you can. The point is that he has to feel that you do care about him. If you keep this in mind, most probably there will be no problem. You could also try Preparing Fido, which is an amazing collection of Baby sounds designed especially to get your dog ready for the arrival of the new Baby!

Avoid unnecessary vet bills! Do your dog’s basic health check!

Getting a Yorkie is not as simple as going to a “pet store” and pick out what may appear to be a purebred when in actuality it may be a product of what is known as a “backyard breeder”. Before purchasing a Yorkie, one must research on what comprises the accepted and desired breed standard. Biewer Yorkies have compact and neat bodies, 8 ½ inches in height and 7 pounds in weight, with shiny and silky coats that can be long enough to reach the floor. These are just a few of the traits that must be present to qualify what one may see as a true purebred.

Getting as much reliable information as one can will definitely arm a prospective owner in the face of shady or irresponsible breeders trying to pass their canines as the real thing. Here are some red flags that may indicate a breeder may not be true to the Biewer Yorkie standard:

Pay and take the puppy with no questions asked

Breeder doesn’t have any connections with accredited or recognized clubs for the breed

No written documentation on the dogs bloodline or lineage

No guarantees that the breed you are getting is of sound health.

Unable to give names of former buyers for reference

Falling for these will have one run the risk of investing not only money, but time, devotion and hope on a canine that was thought to be what one had always wanted but fell short due to the lack of information and education. When searching for a quality breeder, one should look for these signs:

Breeder respect the breed by keeping its temperament of being independent, fearless, of high-energy and people oriented.

Preventing health issues such as hip and joint issues and poor digestion by informing the buyer

Kennels are clean and the diet given is more than adequate

Documents and certificates are ready and nothing is hidden

With an excellent track record of providing dogs to serious dog lovers, Euro Puppy is one resource that one can turn to when looking for a purebred Biewer Yorkie. Euro Puppy boasts it reputation by having a network of dog experts and enthusiasts that not only focus on breeding for companionship, but for also keeping the lineage of the purebred whole and not tainted. Contact with Euro Puppy doesn’t end once one receives the dog.
