Can you breed a Biewer Terrier with Yorkie and still register them?

Big Dog | July 22nd, 2010

Biewer YorkieMost probably not.
These are two different breeds – the Yorkshire Terrier and the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier, although the history of the two breeds in pretty much the same. The Yorkshire Terrier is originated from the earldom Yorkshire, England, as  a result of crossbreeding various Terriers. The real breeding started in the first half of the 18th century, and as it was quite popular, the breeders kept its origin a secret, and it is still uncertain what breeds is the Yorkshire exactly carrying.
The Biewer Yorkie was bred after the Yorkie. It first appeared in Germany in 1984. When the first colored Yorkie was born (as a result of mutation), the breeders made a firm decision: this type has to be handled as a separate, new breed.
Anyway, if you’d like to know the exact answer for the question in the title, the most logical thing to do would be to ask at the place where you’d like to register them, but in most places it probably won’t be accepted.

Avoid unnecessary vet bills! Do your dog’s basic health check!

Can a Biewer Yorkie be registered with the AKC?

Big Dog | January 22nd, 2010

Registering a dog at the American Kennel Club allows the owner to be officially documented as a part of the breed’s history as time goes by and supporting canine research, proper dog care and other thrusts for responsible ownership. Upon registration, the dogs receive a health plan trial, a complimentary veterinarian visit and the eligibility to compete in AKC sponsored events.

Unfortunately the Biewer Yorkie is not a recognized breed by the AKC till this day. However it was accepted by the American Rare Breed Association or ABRA as a rare breed in December 2007 and the National Breed club title was given to the Biewer Terrier Club of American, Inc. In their country of origin, Germany, the breed is recognized by more than 50 clubs and registries. AKC recognized or not, these little dogs are finding their ways into the homes of loving and caring families.

Is Biewer Yorkie and Parti Yorkie the same?

Ann | October 22nd, 2009

Distinguishing an animal from another animal is not that easy especially when they are from both of the same origin. There may be confusion among owners when the appearances are used to determine which is which, but a careful eye can tell the difference.

Biewer Yorkie

The Biewer Yorkie and the Parti Yorkie for example: developed in Yorkshire, England is a terrier type dog. The Yorkshire terrier, known as the Yorkie, there are two kinds: the biewer yorkie and the Parti Yorkie. They are highly energetic, brave, clever, intelligent, loyal, fun loving, affectionate to their human family. The main difference between the two is the Biewer has small, silky blue and tan coat while the Parti has coats of white with black and tiny places with tan.  It is due to a recessive color gene that the parents carry Parti’s are considered rare and may be costly to get one.

The Temperament of the Biewer Yorkie…

D Dog Fan | January 7th, 2008

Isn’t is a weird and wonderful fact of nature, that the small creatures also believe they are large in their own right? I read a couple of years ago, that the best leaders are the tallest and the shortest people. I guess this is pure psychology, but it seems to apply to the Biewer Yorkie as well! The saying: “Dynamite comes in small packages” sure applies to this little guy as well. Biewer Yorkies are not aware of their small stature, and although some might laugh at them, and not take them seriously, this will only infuriate this little dog even more. So do beware of them! Biewer Yorkies make wonderful guard-dogs. The territorial instict of this little dog is high, and it guards its house and home with ferocious assertiveness. Other intruders – be that of the Homo Sapien or the Canine variety – are not welcome. Other little animals like ferrets, small dogs, cats and rabbits will be put in their place quickly enough!

This little dog knows what it wants, and don’t for a second think that it “cleared its throat” for tonight’s choir practice. So although courage is its middle name, a Biewer Yorkie is lovable and very family-oriented. It likes to be in the company of bigger dogs and children. As for how a Biewer reacts when scared or frightened? Well, the fight or flight scenario also applies to them. But they don’t flee. They become snappy, irritable, and bite. Have I only mentioned negative things about this little dog? These are only realistic character traits of a Biewer, that I think must be mentioned. Of course beneath the ” cold and hard exterior” (Geez, that sounds like a line out of a Mills and Boon’s novel), the Biewer Yorkie is one of the most lovable and misunderstood dogs. It wants to be respected, and that is all it asks. There is a Hungarian Proverb that I like very much: ” The pepper is small, but oh so strong”. That truly describes a Biewer Yorkie, I think.
